We watched a great documentary the other night called, More Than A Game. It is the story of four boys who started playing basketball together when they were ten years old, and stayed together, as a unit, through high school. One of the players, LeBron James, went on to the NBA. This was a wonderful movie to watch but what I loved most about it, was how it came about.
The producer of this movie was a college student doing an assignment, for an introduction to film class. It was supposed to be a ten minute film on a topic of interest. It turned out to be a 7+ year project that became a major movie, and I will have to say, a great one. We loved it so much that we watched it 2 nights in a row. You will probably never see me recommend another basketball movie on this blog, but this one is beyond sports…. It is about divine timing, grace, love, struggle and triumph.
The 2 minute official trailer is below (and this alone is fun to watch)
What fun! Further proof that “do what you love…” is great advice! As ever, thanks, Mary.
I like sports! And while it is ‘just a game’, there are some great life lessons in the camaraderie and teamwork, discipline and drive that come from hard work and relying on your teammates and the love and integrity of a GOOD coach…like a good teacher. I love this story, Mary, especially when the news has been full of the not so good sports stories lately. So my husband and I will watch this!
My late Dad used to coach my younger brother in Little League for several years. My mom, sister, and I used to sit on the small bleachers and cheer for them. I know my Dad thought he was teaching my brother and his teammates how to be good sports…but I learned just as much sitting there and listening to how and what he taught them…both inside and outside of the dugout…win or lose…
Several weeks ago, in the town where I grew up in South Jersey, and where my family, nieces and nephews, still live, there was tragedy at our local High School. Four of the young football players were on their way to a late breakfast after an early Saturday morning practice and were killed in a car accident. There have been several stories about the love of the parents and teammates that just touch my heart. And how football and faith are helping the other students, players, and the victim’s parents to heal. The ‘kids’ in your video might have had different life outcomes had it not been for basketball…there are so many of the good stories out there…thanks for sharing this one!
Just requested this from my local library – thanks Mary!
